Customer Review:
This book is aimed at the jazz double bass player mainly as an instructional text However it is useful for other people as well. It gives a uniquely good history of the development of the jazz bass. On the musical side it gives a good explanation of jazz bass lines for the player of any instrument. I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in jazz or with an interest in any bass instrument. A couple of points worth noting: the music is all in standard notation rather than for example tablature, so is less useful if you can't read that. And the book lacks an index which would be useful.

Customer Review:
Thanks to the author for writing an unprecedented and unique (at least as far as I know) book about the history of double bass in jazz. As a matter of fact, one thing (a very important one)is to deduce the history of music while listening to a cd; another thing is to be able to read and compare on paper different ways of playing double bass (possibly the same standard) in different times or being agble to read on paper different styles from different musicians. The author adds his precious comments to musical lines. Through this book (consider I'm not a music genius) I had the chance of understanding many things I had not caught before. If you are very talented in music (one of those guys, for instance, who listen once to a Ray Brown's solo and are able to replay it immediately) you probably will not need this book. you have already all you need inside your ears / brain / hands. On the other hand, if you can't read music (not necessary to be a professional) you can not enjoy a big part of the book.

Customer Review:
Goldsby has filled a gap in the market with this superb book and CD, the first book that brings together a comprehensive overview of the history of jazz bass covering theory, methodology, technique, transcriptions, concepts, development of the art and a biographical section on many of the important players whose craft has helped shape its development. This book also has a superb CD laden with audio examples from the book aswell as a great selection of well recorded play along tracks for the aspiring bassist to practice to. This is a tremendous resource for anyone, whether you are a jazz enthusiast or a musician of any level of ability with an interest in this wonderful sounding instrument, the double bass. Electric bassists will gain as much as acoustic bass players from this book. A virtual bible for its subject matter, and thoroughly recommended to all.
