| Amazon.co.uk Review |
| The double bass concerto is a genre fraught with many difficulties. The gentle, sombre tone of the bass does not carry easily through the sounds of other instruments and it has the shortest bow of any of the string family, which means that it cannot sustain long legato phrases with the grace of a cello. But--and it's a big but--the overlooked nature of the instrument means that it's always a glorious surprise to hear it creep out of the shadows into the spotlight. And when the player is of the calibre of Chi-Chi Nwanoku, the surprise becomes a pleasure. In her hands, the most taxing arpeggiated passages sound easy, and a rather fiendish spiccato section comes off brilliantly. Her instrument (an Amati) also has an extraordinarily rich, rounded tone with one of the most bell-like set of upper harmonics I've ever heard. Musically these concertos by Dittersdorf and Vanhal are not the greatest pieces ever written, but the Swedish Chamber Orchestra treats them with liveliness and energy and Paul Goodwin ensures that the focus is always clearly on the soloist. A treat. --Warwick Thompson |
