Description: “Andrea Chénier is a verismo opera in four acts. Composed by Umberto Giordano to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica, and first performed in 1896 at La Scala, Milan. The story is based loosely on the life of the French poet André Chénier.
Footnote: Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni, which is traditionally paired with Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci, are two of the most famous examples of "Verismo" in Italian opera, (meaning "realism", from Italian vero.) It was a post-Romantic operatic tradition, mostly of stories about the bourgeoisie.”
